Prioritizing Mental Health in Church Leadership
Church leaders play a pivotal role in guiding and supporting their communities, however, the emotional and psychological well being of these leaders is just as crucial as the spiritual guidance they provide.

Fortunately, awareness and monitoring of the mental health needs of church leaders have grown over the years, as evidenced by research which highlights the validity of these concerns.  These are just a few statistics that show the pressing need for mental health resources and support systems for pastors:
23%
of pastors acknowledge having personally struggled with mental illness1
57%
of pastors say they receive little to no mental health support from their church1
42%
of pastors reported feeling burned out, with many citing stress and emotional exhaustion as contributing factors2
70%
of pastors feel lonely and
isolated in their role2
1 in 4
clergy members have
considered suicide at some
point in their ministry3

Pastors’ Mental
Health Matters Too
At Beacon of Light, we understand the unique challenges that church leaders face and believe their mental health is just as critical as the well-being of those they serve. In addition to working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health within the church, we are committed to addressing the harmful beliefs many pastors hold about their own mental health. Too often, church leaders privately feel that seeking help would make them seem incompetent or that they should be able to handle everything on their own without needing support.

These misconceptions need to change, as they contribute to a culture that hinders openness, grace, and healing in the church today. We believe it is essential to break down these barriers to create healthier environments for both leaders and congregations.

Taking Care of the Shepherds
Inspired by these challenges, Beacon of Light is dedicated to helping pastors and faith leaders to navigate the complexities of their roles while prioritizing their mental health. Our goal is to provide a variety of resources that foster resilience, compassion, and overall wellness as they shepherd others.

We are developing training and tools designed to address these diverse needs. Our first course focuses on pastoral care, "Nurturing the Shepherd," explores the unique differences between congregational and pastoral care, emphasizing the importance of maintaining emotional health as a pastor. Learn more about this course in our training library.
Whether you are a pastor or you are a church member that cares deeply about the well-being of your pastor, it's important to remember that they deserve rest and focused care for their own well-being. Beacon of Light is committed to helping pastors thrive both personally and professionally, so they can continue their work with renewed strength and vitality.
